This article explains how to use them to plan gifts and your own holiday play without overspending. - Author: Alex Morgan - Tags: holiday gaming, game deals, gift guides, video games, #gce-97265365 The GameSage Weekly holiday guides are seasonal roundups of games to consider during the holiday season. On IGN, the page is titled "GameSage Weekly: Holiday Guides" [\[1\]](https://www.ign.com/articles/2007/12/13/gamesage-weekly-holiday-guides?ref=idleweekend.net). It also helps to read [GameSage Weekly IGN Guides Mania](https://idleweekend.net/gamesage-weekly-ign-guides/). The guides serve two needs. If you are shopping for other people, they offer gift ideas. If you are shopping for yourself, they point to games you might add to your own backlog, so you can use one guide for both your gift list and your personal list. Deals and availability change, so check the current price on the official store page before you buy anything from a guide. The rest of this article explains which sales are worth watching, what kinds of games the guides recommend, and how to use a guide without overspending. ## Which holiday sales are worth watching? The Epic Games 2025 Holiday Sale is the deal to watch if you buy from Epic's store, with savings of up to 75% [\[2\]](https://store.epicgames.com/news/epic-games-holiday-sale-buyers-guide?lang=en-US&ref=idleweekend.net). It also has two extras that matter when you shop for others and for yourself. Epic Rewards gives you 20% back on purchases [\[2\]](https://store.epicgames.com/news/epic-games-holiday-sale-buyers-guide?lang=en-US&ref=idleweekend.net). That is a return rather than an instant discount, so plan your spending with it in mind before you check out. The sale also lets you gift games to friends [\[2\]](https://store.epicgames.com/news/epic-games-holiday-sale-buyers-guide?lang=en-US&ref=idleweekend.net). If a friend has asked for a specific game, you can buy it for them during the sale instead of guessing from a holiday guide's list. To go further, see [The IGN AU Christmas Survival Guide](https://idleweekend.net/ign-au-christmas-survival-guide/). Whether to wait depends on timing. If you need a game by a certain date, buy it now. If it is not urgent, waiting for the sale can save you money. For example, a game you want for yourself with no deadline can stay on your wishlist until you see when the sale ends, so check the sale end date on the store page before you decide to hold off. ## What kinds of games do holiday guides recommend? Holiday guides often start with the big hardware names, and the Nintendo Switch 2 is one of them. Men's Journal's video game gift guide calls it the fastest-selling console and a top holiday gaming gift [\[3\]](https://www.mensjournal.com/entertainment/what-to-get-the-gamer-in-your-life-for-the-holidays?ref=idleweekend.net). If the person on your list already plays on Nintendo hardware, that makes it an easy place to start. The same guide highlights Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 among its picks [\[3\]](https://www.mensjournal.com/entertainment/what-to-get-the-gamer-in-your-life-for-the-holidays?ref=idleweekend.net). Pairing a console with a single game is a simple gift idea. Say your niece gets a Switch 2 and you add one game she has been talking about; the console and game together make a complete present. ### Check the publication date Guides from different outlets come out at different times. GamingTrend's 2025 holiday video games gift guide was published on November 23, 2025 [\[4\]](https://gamingtrend.com/editorials/gamingtrend-2025-holiday-gaming-gift-guide-the-video-games-edition/?ref=idleweekend.net). A list from a past season can include games that have since been discounted or replaced, so use last year's picks as ideas rather than a final order. ![A tidy stack of colorful video game cases sits on a wooden table beside a game controller and a cup of cocoa.](https://tse1.mm.bing.net/th?q=stack%20of%20video%20game%20cases%20on%20a%20wooden%20table&w=800&h=450&rs=1&c=4) ## How do you use a holiday guide without overspending? Start by cutting the guide down to two or three games that fit the person you're shopping for, or your own console and tastes. A short list is quick to price-check, and it keeps you from buying something that won't run on the right machine. For example, if your friend only has a Nintendo Switch 2, skip any pick that isn't on that console. The Switch 2 is the fastest-selling console and a top holiday gaming gift [\[3\]](https://www.mensjournal.com/entertainment/what-to-get-the-gamer-in-your-life-for-the-holidays?ref=idleweekend.net). Men's Journal also highlighted Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 among its picks [\[3\]](https://www.mensjournal.com/entertainment/what-to-get-the-gamer-in-your-life-for-the-holidays?ref=idleweekend.net), so it belongs on your shortlist only if it matches the platform you have in mind. Next, check each game's platform and price on the official store before you buy. The store page shows which versions exist and what they cost today, which a guide can't keep up with. Then compare the guide's pick with a sale. Epic Games' 2025 Holiday Sale page also lets you gift games to friends, which is useful if the game is for someone else [\[2\]](https://store.epicgames.com/news/epic-games-holiday-sale-buyers-guide?lang=en-US&ref=idleweekend.net). Only make the comparison after you've confirmed the sale price is current on the store page, then buy whichever version is cheaper for the same platform. ## What should you do next with a holiday guide? Your next step is to pick one guide and shortlist its games, noting the platform for each. Use that shortlist for your gift list or your own backlog, so you know exactly which games you're considering before you start shopping. Before you buy anything, check the current prices and sale dates on the official store pages. A guide shows picks at a point in time, and prices and sales can change. Come back to the guide once the holiday season is closer to see which picks are still on sale, and buy from the shortlist you already made. ## Sources 1.
