This portal walkthrough for the Orange Box helps you start at the beginning and move through Portal one chamber at a time. Portal is the game inside The Orange Box, a bundle that also includes Half-Life 2 titles. [\[1\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The%5FOrange%5FBox?ref=idleweekend.net) It opens by teaching you the basics of its physics through a series of test chambers. [\[2\]](https://mattbrett.com/blog/videogames/inside-the-orange-box-portal/?ref=idleweekend.net) That makes it a good fit if you want help without losing the puzzles.

Each chamber gets one short hint, not the full solution, so you can still work out the placement yourself. The hints stay brief on purpose, so you keep the satisfaction of the final solve. Think of them as a nudge toward the mechanic you need, not a step-by-step recipe for the room.

## What do the first test chambers teach you?

The first chambers teach you the [portal gun](https://idleweekend.net/portal-gun-tips-for-beginners/) and how the game's physics engine behaves. Portal opens by walking you through the basics of that physics engine across a series of test chambers [\[2\]](https://mattbrett.com/blog/videogames/inside-the-orange-box-portal/?ref=idleweekend.net). Treat these rooms as training, because the same ideas return later.

### Placing portals is the main skill

You are given a limited portal gun, so every shot counts [\[2\]](https://mattbrett.com/blog/videogames/inside-the-orange-box-portal/?ref=idleweekend.net). Before you fire, look at where the portal will sit and what it needs to do for you. A portal on a wall that leads nowhere uses up one of your few shots.

Try to plan two shots ahead. Ask where you need to end up, then work backward to the surfaces that get you there.

### Momentum carries you through

Use these chambers to see how your speed carries you through a portal. Place one portal on a floor and another on a wall, then jump into the floor portal and watch where you come out. Your speed on the way in shapes your speed on the way out.

Experiment while the stakes are low. The same idea powers the longer puzzles ahead, so a feel for it now saves you trouble later.

## How do you work through the chambers in order?

Start at the first chamber and try to solve it before you look at any hint. Working out the placements yourself is the fastest way to learn how your portals behave, so give each attempt a few minutes before you reach for help. Don't worry if the first few take a while. Early puzzles are meant to teach you the basics, and that takes some trial and error.

Use this routine for every chamber:

1. Start at the first chamber and try to solve it on your own. Test where your portals go and watch what happens when you walk through them.
2. If you get stuck, read only the hint for that chamber. Go back to the puzzle with the new idea, and skip the next chamber's hint so you don't spoil a solution you'd rather find yourself.
3. Once the chamber is solved, move on to the next one in sequence. Don't skip ahead, because later puzzles reuse the moves you practiced earlier.

For example, say chamber four stumps you. Read only chamber four's hint, solve the room, and then start chamber five. If chamber five needs a different idea, repeat the same routine there. Each puzzle stays yours to solve, and you keep your momentum going from one room to the next.

## How do the later chambers get harder?

Later chambers take the mechanics you have already learned and chain them into longer puzzles. Instead of one portal solving one problem, you may need to set up a placement, carry your momentum through it, and then use that position for the next step. Each new chamber asks for more of your attention, not new tools.

If you are going for every achievement, these chambers matter most. The last 14 achievements in The Orange Box are included in Portal [\[3\]](https://www.xboxachievements.com/game/the-orange-box/guide/?ref=idleweekend.net), so the late stages are where you will finish that part of the list.

Hints for these stages should name the mechanic to try, not the exact portal placement. A useful hint might say 'think about using momentum to reach the higher ledge' rather than telling you where to put each portal. That keeps the solution yours to find while still getting you past a sticking point.

When a chamber feels much harder than the one before it, ask yourself which earlier mechanic you have not yet combined with the others. Often the answer is timing: a portal you placed early may need to stay open while you move through a second one. Give that idea a few tries before you move on, since the solution often clicks on a second attempt. Only reach for a hint when the idea has run out. ## Where should you go next?

Play the chambers in order, because each one teaches a move the next one needs. If you skip ahead, you may end up stuck on a skill you never practiced.

If you are unsure which game in The Orange Box to start with, the bundle's guide lists a walkthrough for Half-Life 2: Episode 2 alongside its Portal walkthrough [\[4\]](https://www.ign.com/wikis/the-orange-box?ref=idleweekend.net). You choose which game to play, so pick the walkthrough that matches it. You may also find this useful: [Portal and Half-Life 2 Order](https://idleweekend.net/portal-and-half-life-2-order/).

When you are ready, return to Portal's first chamber and start solving. Each solved chamber gets you one step closer to the last one.
