Return to Ringworld Walkthrough: Chapter Order and Where to Start
Return to Ringworld is a 1994 DOS adventure game with seven chapters you play in order. This walkthrough shows where to begin and how the chapters connect.
In this article
This Return to Ringworld walkthrough follows the chapters in order, so you always know where you are in the game. Each step tells you what to pick up, where to go and what to use it on. For the next step, see Ringworld: Revenge of the Patriarch Walkthrough, Spoiler-Light.
Return to Ringworld is the sequel to the earlier Ringworld game, based on Larry Niven's Known Space novels [1]. It is a point-and-click adventure with puzzles to solve [1]. It was first released in 1994 on DOS [1]. To go further, see Ringworld Revenge of the Patriarch vs Return to Ringworld.
Tsunami Media developed and published the game, and Time Warner Interactive distributed it [1]. Use the chapter links to jump to the part you are stuck on, and read from the top if you are new to the game.
Where do you start in the game?
Your first move is to press F1 to open the main menu. Then you start in Quinn's bedroom on Deck 2, pick up the cable harness, and make your way to the Landing Bay. [2]
Work through these steps in order, one at a time:
- Press F1 to open the main menu. [2]
- Start in Quinn's bedroom on Deck 2. This is your starting point, so look at what is in front of you before you move on. [2]
- Pick up the cable harness from the floor. Do this before you leave the room, because the next step takes you out of it. [2]
- Head to the Landing Bay and take the elevator. Once you finish this step, the opening of the game is done. [2]
What to do if you get stuck
If you can't go on, go back one step and read it again. Most early problems come from a step that was skipped or done out of order, so repeating the step before the one that stopped you often fixes things.
Keep your moves in the same order as the list, even when you think you already know the room. A quick scan of each area before you act will save you from wandering back and forth.
Why the opening matters
These first four steps set up everything after them. Each later part of the game assumes you have done them, so a missed item here can make a later puzzle harder to solve.
Once you reach the Landing Bay, you are ready for the first chapter. Each chapter has its own section in this walkthrough, so you can pick up exactly where you left off.
What are the chapters, and in what order do you play them?
The walkthrough covers seven chapters, and you should play them in the order listed. Each chapter builds on what happens in the one before it, so following the sequence keeps the story and puzzles making sense. [3]
The seven chapters in order
- Lance of Truth
- Canyon Village
- Spaceport Ledge
- Rim Wall
- Spill Mountains
- ARM Base
- Flup Tube System
The list runs from the opening chapter to the last, and these are the chapter names the walkthrough uses. [3]
Why the order matters
Lance of Truth comes first, and it sets up items and characters you rely on later. If you skip ahead to Spaceport Ledge because the name sounds interesting, you may find yourself without the pieces you need. Starting at the beginning avoids that kind of dead end.
Think of the chapters as stages in one continuous adventure rather than separate levels. Finishing one gives you the situation the next one assumes. When you reach the next chapter, you should already know what you have and where you are.
Jumping back to the chapter you are stuck on
Each chapter has its own section in the walkthrough. You do not have to read the whole guide to get help with one puzzle. If you get stuck in Rim Wall, open the Rim Wall section and read only the steps you need. [3]
Use the list above as your map. Once you finish a chapter, move to the next name on the list. For example, after Canyon Village, the next stop is Spaceport Ledge, then Rim Wall.
Keeping track as you go
Note which chapter you are in before you try a new puzzle. When you need help, you then know exactly which section to open. The chapter names match the headings in the guide, so they are the easiest way to tell where you are. [3]
How do the Spaceport Ledge, Spill Mountains and Flup Tube chapters connect?
The middle of the adventure is three chapters that run in a fixed sequence: an escape, a descent, and a trip through tunnels. Each one builds on the last, so the story keeps pulling you forward as you go.
Spaceport Ledge: the escape
In Spaceport Ledge, your goal is to escape. [4] This walkthrough gives the chapter its own section, so you can work through the escape one step at a time. [3]
Keep a short note of what you have picked up and where you used it. When a door or panel does not respond, the answer is often an item you already carry, so test those before you search the whole area again.
Spill Mountains: the descent
Spill Mountains asks you to descend. [4] Once you have left the ledge behind, the walkthrough follows your route down the mountains one step at a time.
This chapter feels different from the escape, because you are moving downward instead of looking for a way out. Take each area slowly and look over the screen before you move on, so you do not skip anything you might need.
Flup Tube System: the catacombs
The Flup Tube chapter sends you through the catacombs of the Flup Tube system. [4] It is the last of the seven chapters in the walkthrough, so it comes right after the descent. [3]
Treat the catacombs as a series of passages and work through each one in order before you turn back. Going back and forth between passages you have already cleared wastes time and makes it harder to remember which clues you have checked.
Save often
These chapters ask a lot of you, so save often if the game allows it. For example, save right before you start the descent into Spill Mountains, and again once you reach the catacombs. That way a mistake in one chapter does not cost you the whole stretch.
Where can you find a full, detailed walkthrough?
The most practical full option is the walkthrough in Just Adventure's guide archive, written by Veikko Danilas. It is split into numbered parts, so you can open only the section you need. [5]
Just Adventure's multi-part walkthrough
The archive lists this guide as "Return to Ringworld Walkthrough, part 6 of 27." [5] That means the full guide runs to 27 parts, so you do not have to read from the top to find your place. If you are stuck on a puzzle, scan the part titles on the archive page until you find the area you are in.
Splitting a long guide this way helps when you want to keep your place. Read one part, close the page, and come back later without losing track of where you stopped.
DEngel's PC guide from 2024
If you want a newer PC-focused guide, DEngel's "Guide and Walkthrough" for the PC is dated March 24, 2024. [6] That makes it one of the more recent options for this game. [6]
Because it is more recent than the other two, it is a good first stop if an older guide's wording or screenshots seem out of date. Check the guide's page to see whether it covers the chapter you are on.
Balmoral Software's original text walkthrough
The oldest option is Balmoral Software's text walkthrough, dated July 4, 1994. [2] It is the original guide from the game's release era, so it shows the early approach to the adventure. [2]
Its text is short and direct, with steps such as pressing the F1 key for the main menu and picking up the cable harness from the floor. [2] If you prefer a quick list of actions over a longer narrative guide, this one is easy to scan.
Which one to start with
Start with the Just Adventure parts if you want a guide you can move through in pieces. Choose DEngel's guide if you want the most recent PC version of a walkthrough. Use Balmoral's text if you like a short, original guide you can read in one sitting.
What should you do next?
Start with the opening steps, then work through the seven chapters in the order the walkthrough lists them. Begin by picking up the green stepping disk and using the table to take the stasis negator from inside [3]. Once that's done, move into Lance of Truth and continue through Canyon Village, Spaceport Ledge, Rim Wall, Spill Mountains, ARM Base and Flup Tube System.
Playing out of order is the easiest way to get stuck. If you want the broad route through the whole adventure first, the pillar walkthrough covers it without spoilers. Come back here when you need step-by-step detail for one chapter.
