You can avoid missing any Shining Force recruit by knowing which characters are optional and where each one waits. Optional characters are the ones most players miss, and many of them are unique classes with their own moves and spells [\[1\]](https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/genesis/563340-shining-force/faqs/63031?ref=idleweekend.net). Those extras are easy to overlook because nothing in the main story forces you to find them. It also helps to read [Shining Force Tips for Beginners](https://idleweekend.net/shining-force-tips-for-beginners/).

A location list helps you confirm each recruit before you move on. The Character Locations Quicklist is built for finding where someone is, and clicking a character's name gives you more details [\[2\]](https://sf2.shiningforcecentral.com/characters/character-locations-quicklist/?ref=idleweekend.net).

This article covers recruits only and leaves out the main story. For battle-by-battle help, read the [Shining Force walkthrough](https://idleweekend.net/shining-force-walkthrough/) in this cluster, which covers the main story.

## Why are some Shining Force characters easy to miss?

Most of the characters you can miss are optional, and many of them are unique classes with their own moves and spells. Because they sit outside the main story path, it is easy to finish a playthrough without them.

### Why unique classes matter

Many of the optional characters are unique classes with their own moves and spells [\[1\]](https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/genesis/563340-shining-force/faqs/63031?ref=idleweekend.net). That makes them more than extra bodies in your party. A character whose spells no one else in your roster can cast gives you options your standard units cannot match.

Suppose your party already has plenty of front-line fighters but nobody who can handle a particular job. A unique class can fill that gap, because its abilities are its own and not a copy of what your other units already do.

### Why they are easy to miss

Hidden characters are a common reason a party ends up incomplete. Optional recruits do not announce themselves, so it is easy to walk past one without realizing it.

The problem builds over time. If you do not track who you have met, you can reach the end of a playthrough with a party that has gaps you never planned for. By then, you may have spent your gold and experience on the units you already have.

### How to plan around it

Before you move on from a chapter, look at your party and note which roles are thin. Then think about whether any optional recruit could cover that role. A single question like this, asked at the right moment, keeps a missing slot from becoming a permanent one.

Once you know which roles you need, you can decide which optional characters are worth tracking down. Treat each unique class as a possible answer to a specific gap, not just another name for your list.

## Who is in the full Shining Force character list?

The full character list names every member of the main Shining Force roster, so it is the fastest way to see who can join your party [\[3\]](https://fantasyanime.com/shiningforce/sflist.htm?ref=idleweekend.net). It opens with Max, Lowe, Mae, Ken and Luke, then continues through Hans, Tao, Gong, Gort and Khris [\[3\]](https://fantasyanime.com/shiningforce/sflist.htm?ref=idleweekend.net). Arthur, Balbaroy, Amon, Diane and Zylo follow, then Pelle, Vankar, Jogurt and Kokichi [\[3\]](https://fantasyanime.com/shiningforce/sflist.htm?ref=idleweekend.net). For more detail, see [Shining Force II Walkthrough](https://idleweekend.net/shining-force-ii-walkthrough/).

Shining Force Central runs a full list too, and each character has an individual page of their own [\[4\]](https://sf1.shiningforcecentral.com/characters/shining-force/?ref=idleweekend.net).

### Using the list as a checklist

Keep the list open at the start of each chapter. Read down the names and note which ones are already in your party. Look at it again when the chapter ends, so you know who joined along the way.

The list runs long, so read it in order. The later names, such as Guntz, Domingo, Earnest, Alef, Torasu, Lyle, Bleu, Adam, Hanzou and Musashi, sit further down the page [\[3\]](https://fantasyanime.com/shiningforce/sflist.htm?ref=idleweekend.net). They are the easiest to skip when your eye stops at the first screen.

### Spotting gaps in your party

Comparing your party with the list is the fastest way to find a hole. Mark each name you have seen in your party, then look at what is left. Any unmarked name is one you still need to account for.

Say your party after a few chapters is Max, Lowe, Mae and Ken. The first names you have not yet seen are Luke, Hans and Tao, and Luke comes right after Ken [\[3\]](https://fantasyanime.com/shiningforce/sflist.htm?ref=idleweekend.net). That tells you where to look first without guessing.

Do this comparison after every chapter, not only when something feels wrong. Because the names run in one continuous order, a missing name is easy to spot against the ones you already have. A gap caught early is much easier to fix than one you notice near the end of the game.

## Where do you find each Shining Force recruit?

The character locations quicklist is for one job: finding where a specific recruit is. If you know a name and can't remember where that character joins, open this page first. The source puts it plainly: "Just want to know where to find someone?" [\[2\]](https://sf2.shiningforcecentral.com/characters/character-locations-quicklist/?ref=idleweekend.net)

### How to look up a recruit

Start with one name from your missing list. Scan the quicklist for that character and go straight to their entry. Working one name at a time is quicker than reading the whole page, especially when several party slots are still open.

Click a character's name on the quicklist for more details. Those details are what you read once you've found the right entry, so don't stop at the name alone. [\[2\]](https://sf2.shiningforcecentral.com/characters/character-locations-quicklist/?ref=idleweekend.net)

### Using the quicklist during play

Use the quicklist when you're unsure whether a recruit is still available. Look before you backtrack to a town or area you've already cleared, so you don't make a trip for nothing. Read the entry before you move, so you know where you're headed.

A simple routine keeps you on track:

1. Write down the name you're missing.
2. Find that character on the quicklist.
3. Click the name and read the details.
4. Note the place you need to visit, then move to the next name.

Repeat that routine for each gap. Doing one name at a time keeps you from wandering the map without a plan.

### Keeping the lookup focused

Look up only the names still missing from your party. Searching for characters you already have adds clutter and slows you down. Once someone joins, cross that name off and move on to the next one.

If a name doesn't seem to match where you expected, go back to its entry and reread the details slowly. A second pass often catches something a quick first read missed. Then carry on with your remaining names still in view.

## How do you check a recruit's stats before you commit?

Each recruit has an individual page, and that page is where you see what they bring to your party. Every character's page lists weapon and spell information along with stat growth details [\[4\]](https://sf1.shiningforcecentral.com/characters/shining-force/?ref=idleweekend.net). Those two things tell you more than a recruit's starting numbers alone.

### Weapons and spells

Start with the spell list, because it shows what a character can do that nobody else in your party can. A healer or a mage with a useful spell can cover a gap that a stronger melee fighter cannot. Read the weapons too, since they show how the character will fight in ordinary battles.

Compare the spell list against the people already in your party. If you already have a healer, a second one may add less than a fighter who fills an empty slot. The spells tell you what a recruit adds right now.

### Stat growth

Stat growth shows how a character develops as you level them [\[4\]](https://sf1.shiningforcecentral.com/characters/shining-force/?ref=idleweekend.net). A recruit who starts weak can become strong later, while one who starts strong may stop improving as quickly. Because the growth details sit on the same page as the spells, you can judge long-term value before you commit.

For example, imagine two candidates who both bring a useful spell. If one has stronger growth in the stats your party needs most, that is usually the better pick for a long playthrough. The spell covers today's battles, and the growth covers the battles that come later.

### Deciding which slot to fill

Look at both the spells and the growth before deciding which party slot to fill. A spell that helps now may matter less in the late game. Strong growth may not help much if the character never gets the spell you need.

Put the two together, then choose the recruit who covers the gap your party actually has. A party with two healers and no front-line fighter has a different problem than one with plenty of attackers and no one to heal them, so the right recruit depends on which gap is bigger.

## What should you do next to finish your party?

Finish your party by checking the roster against the recruits you have actually gathered. Go through the full list of names and mark each one you have, so the gaps stand out at a glance. The character list gives you every member of the main roster to work from [\[3\]](https://fantasyanime.com/shiningforce/sflist.htm?ref=idleweekend.net).

Any name still missing from your marks is the one to look up. The character locations quicklist is built for this, since it helps you find where a character is so you can see whether that recruit is still available to you [\[2\]](https://sf2.shiningforcecentral.com/characters/character-locations-quicklist/?ref=idleweekend.net). Click a character's name there for more details [\[2\]](https://sf2.shiningforcecentral.com/characters/character-locations-quicklist/?ref=idleweekend.net).
